We stayed for 1 week in a small town called Ochi-cho in Kochi prefecture. The town hall is trying in some ways to promote people to move there and they have some empty houses in the ‘akiya-bank’ that we looked around. They gave us a house to stay in for a week while we were ‘thinking’ practically for free. 
The town operated local products shop was very nice, selling all the local veg and on Sundays only, the ochi-cho burger.
There are few rivers in the area. You can go canoeing.
This some local fruit being sold in someones yard with an honesty box. The local citrus is pretty tasty.

Museum of the natural forest by Tadao Ando
A little bit up the nearby mountain is a museum featuring lots of fossils, geology and botany.
It was completely empty of visitors. We thought it needs a cafe! Then locals would have incentive to visit more than once! Plus a community/education program organiser of course.
