Dyeing with Onion Skins

We were invited to the village community centre kitchen to dye with some people from our neighborhood who are thinking of starting a kind of dyeing club.

This vat is made from boiling up tons of regular onion skins. Onions are the main local product of our area, so there are plenty of skins!

This vat is made from red onions skins.

This is called ‘myoban’ it is usually used for pickles. We alternate with the dye vat and this mordant(?).

dissolving the ‘myoban’.

We boiled the cloth for 20 minutes in the dye vat at 80 degreees C.

Then we wash it, then soak it for 20 minutes in the ‘myoban’ at about 40 degrees C. We repeated this process 3 times.

This slightly greenish colour is from the red onion vat! surprising colour! Apparently, the purple colour is good at staining but staining and dyeing are different chemical processes.

These lovely yellows and oranges are from the normal onion vat.
